The Bourbon is bringing laid-back Stateside-dive-bar vibes mixed with unmistakable East London attitude to Bow’s buzzing Roman Road.
Tucked just behind Victoria Park, step inside the neighbourhood gem bedecked with quirky, mismatched furnishings; a backbar brimming with rare bourbons; lip-smacking smokehouse favourites and a soundtrack that’s all about soul.
Along with more than 40 bourbons – including some very rare 23-year-old bottles – there will also be an exciting selection of all-star American beers. The cult cans, difficult to find in the UK, include Pabst Blue Ribbon, Oskar Blues Can-o-Bliss Citrus and Cigar City Fancy Papers Hazy IPA. American wine and signature cocktails will also be served up including the Superstar Martini (think Pornstar Martini but with the added smoothness of vanilla pods soaked in bourbon).
Drinks this good require some serious soakage and it doesn’t come much more satisfying than the Hickory barbecue dishes being served up by chef Sam Gordon who made his name working in some of the best-known bourbon bars in Australia including the acclaimed Varnish in Perth.
The handwritten chalkboard menu from the ex-Ivy Senior Sous Chef will go way beyond basic bar food. Apart from the buns, supplied by Paul Rhodes Bakery, everything else will be made in-house. Vegan and veggie options are sure to be just as sought-after as the melt-in-the-mouth brisket, ribs and burnt ends. Look out too for Sam’s homemade sauces, including paprika aioli, available by the bottle to take home.
The Bourbon’s eclectic interior will be a nod to the nouveau dive bars of the States, distilled into inimitable East London neighbourhood style. Think speakeasy-style red pendant lights sitting above the long bar and bold street-art and paintings of some of the soul greats – Al Green, Ray Charles and Billie Holiday.
